Young Austrian Archduke Paul "Gustl" Gustave is in an arranged engagement to Princess Matilda, but his uncle, the emperor, decides to let Gustl have a fling with ballet dancer Lisl Gluck. The emperor doesn't realize that Lisl is a decoy used by Gustl while he has a real affair with a countess. As the charade continues, Lisl and Gustl find they have feelings for each other, but the emperor disapproves of Gustl marrying outside his class.
