Ishimura (Musei Tokugawa) is the jobless father of nine children.

Meanwhile a flashback reveals that Ajay was a successful doctor in the United States and who led a happy life.
In the remote Alpine village of Tolzbad at the turn of the century, people talk quietly and restrain their movements lest avalanches come and kill them. Charles Dobbs is a British secret agent investigating the apparent suicide of Foreign Office official Samuel Fennan.
