Lagaan tells the tale of the Indian village Champaner, beset by drought and British colonialism in the year 1893. One day, he hears Daewongun, the most powerful man in Joseon and the father of the King, is going to hold a national competition of pansori performers known as âNaksungyeon.â Shin Jae-hyo decides to teach Chae-sun who has a true voice to perform âChunhyangga.â If anyone finds out that Chae-sun is a woman, Shin Jae-hyo and Chae-sun will both face death.

The film also shows Chéreau directing rehearsals for Mozartâs "Don Giovanni" in Salzburg, revealing both the unity of and profound differences between his opera and theater work.
In 1818, when Joseph Mohr is assigned to be the new assistant priest in Oberndorf, a small Austrian town near Salzburg, the young man is full of ideas and ideals.
