The Great Silence (Il grande silenzio, 1968), or The Big Silence, is an Italian spaghetti western. The movie features a score by Ennio Morricone and stars Jean-Louis Trintignant as Silence, a mute gunfighter with a grudge against bounty hunters, assisting a group of outlawed Mormons and a woman trying to avenge her husband (one of the outlaws). The three main characters continually change allegiances and get the upper hand only to be thwarted by fellow outlaws, mysterious insurance investigators and each other. In the opening scene one of the three outlaws is dressed very similar to Clint Eastwood's character in the "Dollars" trilogy, one is dressed as Lee Van Cleef's characters in those and other westerns, and one as Franco Nero's character Django.

Slater must now be persuaded - innocently - to take his place and is shown a doctored copy of a survey showing a stream of gold beyond the Big Dyke, which Steyner encourages him to excavate. Slater encounters a plot of deception and intrigue, as well as finding romance in the form of Steynerr's wife Terry (Susnnah York). Slater is called on to save the mine and its workers when the conspirators try to blow it up.

While on the run from the police, Steve Railsback hides in a group of moviemakers where he pretends to be a stunt man. Both aided and endangered by the director (Peter O'Toole) he avoids both the police and sudden death as a stuntman. The mixture of real danger and fantasy of the movie is an interesting twist for the viewer as the two blend in individual scenes.
