Tout a commencé comme un gag. Au bon vieux temps des magnétoscopes, le comédien Patrick Bouchitey (l'inoubliable curé de La vie est un long fleuve tranquille) colle bout à bout sur son lecteur de salon des extraits d'émissions sur les animaux qu'il postsynchronise ensuite avec un micro. Le résultat est tellement cocasse qu'il est diffusé à la télévision sous forme de petits modules récréatifs et qu'il connaît un succès inattendu auprès des adultes comme des enfants (encore que certaines séquences soient assez crues et fassent d'ailleurs l'objet d'un chapitre à part sur le DVD). Vingt ans plus tard, La Vie privée des animaux fait l'objet d'une compilation dont l'acteur démontre que l'habit fait souvent le moine et que ce n'est pas aux vieux singes qu'on apprend à faire des grimaces ni aux lémuriens à tirer la langue.
Jan Bocquoy narrates the story of his sexual life to age 28, imagining his conception (parents drunk, the encounter lasting ten seconds) and reporting his first orgasm (at the hands of Eddy, in a beach-side caravan, as they watch Laurel and Hardy), his comparative experiences with girls, and his move from Harelbeck to Brussels. There he meets Greta, bartender at a Bohemian cafe, who teaches him the Kama Sutra, the naked Esther, who reads him stories, and Thérèse, his wife for three years. They split after two children; he moves to a small flat, writes pornography to pay the bills, works sporadically on a novel, espouses anarchism, and meets more women. His self-confidence grows.

Tout irait pour le mieux jusquâà ce quâun vent mauvais apporte son lot dâadversité compromettant sérieusement la cohésion du groupe.
