It combined fact and fiction to tell daring stories of professional grifters, leaving viewers with a feeling of nostalgia for the Showa era. Following that, another movie has been completed. This new live-action film, "Eat and Run - 6 Beautiful Grifters" was made with the objective of filming its main actresses as beautifully as possible. The film is made up of six episodes directed by six different directors who rose to the challenge, two of whom are Oshii himself.

Trevor Newandyke is a struggling comedian. Not only does he bomb on stage, but he bombs in everyday life. He’s fed up with all the jerks who push him around. All he wants is a break, and for someone to get him. Instead of taking a breath and getting himself together or taking his anger to the stage, he turns to the loud din of his headphones and the crackling glow of fire to ease his mind. He’s not only a lousy comic, but a pyromaniac, as well.

Nostalgia is Takashi Miike’s favorite film of his considerable body of work. Including biographical elements, Nostalgia centers around the home and school of a young boy, whose family mix the violent and dysfunctional with the comic and the loveable. Though containing elements of the sudden and shocking brutality that many associate with this director, Young Thugs – Nostalgia is more concerned with a child’s moment of leaving the internalized world of fantasy, and passing on eagerly to the next stage of life. A wonderful, touching, startling vision that is uniquely Miike’s.
Lynchburg Virginia is a present day mecca for the influx of Baptists that study there at the world's largest Christian college and for the immigrating retirees that arrive frequently. Today, the central Virginia city celebrates their history but they had to "make it" first. A bygone time when it was an industrial mecca is the setting for this satire. A long period of an "old money and those that work for them" social structure faded only recently. The story is an accurate depiction of the varied types of daft characters that populated the elite when that money was new - during an era of boom and rapid growth. There is an addictive nostalgia to the black and white photography as well as the quirky acting typical for the times. Considered hilarious by the locals who "get it," this film is a treasure.

A comedy built on non sequiturs, the French-Austrian production No Rest for the Brave recalls Luis Buñuel at his most playful, or perhaps more accurately, the absurd New Zealand “exquisite corpse” film The Price of Milk. Brave opens on a bar in a sleepy farming village where two men, Igor and Basile, are having a conversation about their dreams. Concerned about his friend’s addled state, Igor visits him the next day but can’t find him; it turns out Basile has committed a massacre in the town square, and promptly shoots Igor dead. From there, the film returns to the bar, where a man named Hector is preparing to do some shady business with a bunch of gangsters.
A provocative, seemingly absurd patchwork movie which sends a worthwhile message about hope against all odds, love, children and human understanding. Schoolgirl Victorine has an insane mother and an alcoholic father who can never find his way home in their maze of slum apartment blocks. Aggressive, sexually threatening boys of all ages are everywhere, and while the teacher eventually relents to a gang of adolescent rapists, Victorine gives herself to a rowdy gang of older layabouts, eventually winning the heart of burglar Paul.
Bahia Benmahmoud, a free-spirited young woman, has a particular way of seeing political engagement, as she doesn't hesitate to sleep with those who don't agree with her to convert them to her cause - which is a lot of people, as all right-leaning people are concerned. Generally, it works pretty well. Until the day she meets Arthur Martin, a discreet forty-something who doesn't like taking risks. She imagines that with a name like that, he's got to be slightly fascist. But names are deceitful and appearances deceiving..
Simply put, this is a movie about the identity crisis of a modern man.
