A matinee idol Arindam Mukherjee (Uttam Kumar) is going by train to collect an acting award. The next morning, Aditi who had surreptitiously taken notes of their conversation destroys them - not wanting to reveal Arindam's darkest secrets. When the train reaches its destination, Arindam alights and is surrounded by his fans and is back to his normal star self where there is no place for guilt, confessions and Aditi.
Student leader in his college, popular collegian, Prabhu, is asked by the Principal to invite the Governor of state, Ranjit Singh Rathore, to be the chief guest on the annual day of the college. When he goes to invite Ranjit, he meets his daughter, Shruthi, and falls in love with her. She too falls in love with him. Since there is fear of terrorism in the state, Ranjit does not permit his daughter to travel without bodyguards. On one occasion, she does manage to give them the slip and runs away with Prabhu at a dance festival in Chidambaram. Shortly thereafter there is a threat of a bomb being planted there, Shruthi is returned home, and Prabhu arrested. Shruthi is forbidden to see Prabhu, Prabhu is released from police custody, after a severe beating. Prabhu goes to meet Shruthi, and is where he will find evidence that will lead him to a terrorist responsible for planting killing people. Will Prabhu be able to get out alive and tell this tale, or will he end up as another victim?

Guru is a fantasy film. It is highly symbolic and makes a statement on terrorism by religions and the evils of the world. The story starts in small peaceful village in India. When an ambitious politician's (NF Varghese) goons disguised as Muslims cause trouble at the local temple, tensions break out between the two communities. The tensions soon flame into a religious riot. Muslims and Hindus began killing each other for the sake of their own religions. RaghurÄman joins Hindu gang which is about to attack a group of Muslims who have taken refuge in a guru's asram (a place where a holy guru lived and worked). But at a point RaghurÄman has an out of the world experience in the asram.
